An unusual specimen with a huge tongue from the Brazilian Dog carnival. This remarkable specimen comes to us from one of our friends in Brazil. This 4-legged creature was photographed at the Brazilian Dog Carnival. Guess the breed (or species?)

No more calls, we have a wiener!  We had some funny guesses on this one, but the winner has to be one of our members who guessed that this cute little guy is a Brazilian Tongue Terrier!

Takya, a very cute mixed-breed dog - looks like a teddy-bear.

Takya

Takya was a gift to one of our friends several years ago. She was thought to be a Chow/Rottweiler mix as a puppy. This was believable when she was a puppy. But as she has grown up, her owner had doubts, especially once her ears stood up!  Since then many have guessed at her breed, but it was time to find out what Takya’s breed mix really is. She is a very smart, loyal, and independent dog and loves to retrieve over and over again.

What a great looking dog and such a cute smile! Any guesses as to what Takya’s breed mix really is? You might be surprised. We’ll post Takya’s results in the next few days.

Takya’s results are in – not too surprisingly, Takya’s significant/major breed is Australian Cattle Dog with a couple of intermediate breeds – German Shepherd and Miniature Poodle. Yes, Miniature Poodle. I wonder, does that make her an Australian Cattle-Poo?

Thanks to our friend Forrest for sending us Takya’s pictures to use.

Lucy, a very cute mixed-breed puppy with large erect ears.

Lucy, a very lucky dog!

Meet Lucy. This lucky pup was adopted by a very kind lady from a non-profit rescue organization in Upstate NY. She originally came from a high kill shelter in NC where the owner surrendered the litter of puppies. She was adopted as a lab/border collie mix. But now her lovely ears are standing straight up!

Think you know what her breed mix is?  Scroll down for her test results. Got a cute mixed-up mutt? Send us a picture and maybe we’ll use your dog in this section.

We got quite a few guesses for Lucy but no one came close to her actual breed mix.  We got her DNA test results back and here’s what we learned.

Lucy has 4 intermediate breeds in her background (intermediate = approx 25%).

The breeds we found are:

  • Miniature Bull Terrier
  • Newfoundland
  • Chow-chow
  • Pomeranian

Thanks Erica for sending us Lucy’s pictures to use.

American Staffordshire Terrier, or Pit Bull, often interbred to create larger dogs.Q.  Why are some pit bulls 30 pounds and some 100+?     – Brandon, Des Moines, Iowa

A.  The primary determinant of a dog’s adult size is its genes. Common Pit Bulls, as opposed to show dogs, are often interbred with other breeds to increase their size and/or aggressiveness. As a result, many Pit Bulls are a mix of 2 or 3 breeds. Some breeders have bred them to Bull Mastiffs or Presa Canarios to get a bigger dog. A true (purebred) pit bull is actually an American Staffordshire or the American Pit Bull Terrier variant, and is going to be about 45-60 lbs. It is possible with cross breeding or inbreeding to create Pit Bull-like dogs of almost any size.
