Columbo – a rare breed? – Case Study #52
A dog named ‘Columbo’, a mixed-breed dyed to look like a panda, shown here in Tokyo where he lives. His owner dyed the originally white coloured dog, with a special hair dye to cover up stains around its eyes which was conspicuous when he was first found abandoned. As a result, the panda look-alike became the most popular dog in the neighbourhood and the owner said he hopes Columbo’s popularity will help rescue other abandoned dogs like Columbo, where in Tokyo last year, 700 of them were put to sleep.

Columbo’s actual breed – Case Study #52
This cute and slightly disguised dog is actually a Maltese – Poodle mix. Thanks for all your guesses on this one.
Maggie, the Wonder Dog – Case Study #51

Maggie
Maggie just turned 2 years old and we’re still wondering what breeds she has in her. She loves to run and is very cuddly. She loves soft things and often rolls up in blankets and hides. She’s very fast and can outrun her roommate who’s a Jack Russell terrier. She’s about 15 lbs and is a very sweet dog.
She’s quite an interesting mix. There are probably several breeds in Maggie. What’s your guess? Send us an email with your guess and you’ll receive a coupon for a discount on a breed test.
Maggie’s Results – Case Study #51
We got Maggie’s results back and here’s what we learned. Even Kreskin wouldn’t have guessed these results.
Maggie’s breed mix is:
Level 2 Shih Tzu (37-74%)
Level 3 Labrador Retriever (20-36%)
Level 4 Pomeranian (10-19%)
Level 5 Dalmation (Less than 10%)
Results like this can mean that there was still a substantial portion of Maggie’s genes that weren’t identified. This is often because the remaining genes didn’t map to any other breeds in a great enough concentration for identification.
Quite an interesting mix!
Bunn-e, mystery breed? Case Study #50 results

Bunn-e
Meet Bunn-e. This sweet and very sociable dog is a little over a year old and weighs about 35 lbs. She’s a little shy but very playful and loves to run. She’s kind of long and lean. Bunn-e gets along great with other dogs and cats.
Thanks for all the guesses about Bunn-e?
We got Bunn-e’s results back and [drumroll please...] she’s a mix of Chow-chow and Dachshund (along with a few others we think). Bunn-e’s test showed these two breeds as intermediate in her mix, meaning they likely comprise about 25-35% of her DNA each, or together a bit more than half of her DNA. There are definitely some traits visible in Bunn-e from each of these.
Wiley, this one’s not a coyote – Case study #49

Wiley
Meet Wiley. This cute little dog is very active and mischievous. In fact, her nickname is Satan. Her behavior was perhaps the best clue to her breed. She’s gotten a bit bigger since this picture was taken, but she’s still a small-medium sized dog. What do you think Wiley’s breed mix is? Let us know what you think.
